When Gaye stepped
from her car on a Thursday at Westbere, we were all immediately beneficiaries
of that wonderful smile. Staff and clients alike were then treated
to a day of Gaye’s sailing skills and captivating sunny personality.
A great team
member, no task was too large or small for the multitalented Gaye.
Sitting in the
cramped bow of a Walker Bay 10 teaching an excited youngster the basics
of sailing was one of Gaye’s favourite jobs.
But perhaps we
will remember her best for the painful hours spent on her knees on
the stern of our Challenger trimaran giving Hilary Lister her first
near solo sailing experience. This arduous and selfless action led
to one person’s astonishing achievement and thence inspiration
for countless others around the world.
Meanwhile, away
from the lake, Gaye was a keen committee member and her talent for
attention to detail kept us “on the straight and narrow”
with respect to the Health and Safety Executive.
All this was
executed in an aura of sartorial elegance and just the correct amount
of lipstick, powder and perfume… a desert island of splendour
in a sea of largely scruffy sailing types !
All of us at
WSO have lost a dear and talented friend. However, we have our fond
memories and her warm and happy disposition gave an example for us
all to follow.
A beacon of light has gone out of our lives but the embers of memory
burn bright and mean we shall never forget her.
